just came across this today while glancing through some of my favorite material. out of all of lewis' writings, i always find myself going back to the weight of glory. perhaps it just grabs me because it is full of a nice variety of important concepts, or maybe because it's just a bunch of short messages and i can't buck up enough to read a big book. anyway, it's great stuff to chew on, and good for you too!

check this out:
"if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong but too weak. we are halfhearted creatures fooling about with drink and sex and ambition, when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mudpies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. we are far too easily pleased." -c.s. lewis, the weight of glory

it's funny when i think about it- our enjoyment of and indulgence in worldly things is nothing compared to the riches and fullness of Christ. there's this impression given, i think, by moralists that asserts that the road to satisfaction in the promises of God involves denying pleasure or not enjoying life. it's as if we compare the life of Godliness with that of the world, like a wallflower at the school dance, and say, "they sure look like they're having a good time, but i'm not that way so i'll just sit here in my chair because that's what i do, bored, tired, and stupid."

no! God calls us to get up and dance, spin the girls 'round, and enjoy what he's given us. maybe that's a little too abstract, but i think it works. God offers us more than candy, happy meals, and take-out chinese. He's got a feast for us to indulge in. and how do we engage Him in this exquisite offering? we do not look at the world with our noses turned up, but we offer them what He has given us, because it is too good to keep it to ourselves. by offering Himself as our sole satisfaction, God is igniting in us a passion for His name, for His fame, for His glory.

i've been sitting in the lab for 15 minutes writing this post and, in that time, molly (my doggy) has managed to weave herself in and out of my chair legs and get her leash in a huge knot. silly puppy.

enjoy God today.
