my grandparents are cool
22 December 2004

i'm back from the vacation-within-a-vacation, which was so-so. i enjoyed the time with jen, but after 2 days with her brother's kids she got horribly ill. the illness left her incapacitated in nashville the next day, and then i got the bug from her! so that summed up the majority of our last week. laid up like big dogs, sick and loaded up on 50 different drugs thanks to walgreen's.

did get to see 7:22 before getting sick, praise Jesus. it was great. louie giglio finished up this series, called treasure, on giving and our american perspectives of wealth and poverty. the night ended with an offering being taken up to pay for some very needy women to have cars bought for them. we collectively gave over $57,000. too stinkin' awesome, for real. all of the money left over from paying for the vehicles is going into other projects for needy families. very inspiring.

had a great dinner with jon owen that night as well. love ya, jon. you're a good friend, and an awesome guy to hang out with. we gotta do this stuff more often!

also got to see the chattanooga choo choo, which was neat. jen and i got a couple of little fortune cards from one of those machines like off of big (from way back in the day, tom hanks, chop sticks, etc.). mine said the devil wants to get me. what an understatement!

enjoyed the vine at southeast christian church on our last day. they were recording for a live cd that evening, so the entire service was music. loved it. they really do a lot of stuff by deliriou5?. good songs.

i'm finally recovering from this sickness. it's shrunken into this measly little sinus drainage, and no doubt it will be gone by Christmas.

this week my grandparents from my mom's side are in town. i got to spend some good quality time with them last night. jen was able to meet them finally, and we hung out for a while. i made a huge batch of cookies for everybody, so we ate and watched secondhand lions after much chatting. terrific family movie. i laughed a lot.

last night while we were all talking, my grandma saw in the tv guide that 2 mules for sister sara was playing on amc, so she told my grandpa to put it on. he promptly remarked to me, "i done seen that movie 49 times, david," to which my grandma broke in with, "and you're about to have seen it 50 times now!" we had a good laugh over that. my grandma sure does love 2 mules for sister sara.

there's this one scene where the camera cuts back and forth between the nun and the cowboy, and when i saw it something hit me: no wonder my grandma likes this stuff... shes the nun and my grandpa's the cowboy! some bio on my grandparents: my grandma has always been the extra nice little old pentecostal lady. always has something loving to say and calls everybody "shoog" (instead of the yankee vernacular "sugar"). whenever the family gets together grandma always plays the piano or cranks out a bunch of gospel tunes on the family accordion and we all sing (singing definitely runs in our genes). my gruff grandpa, on the other hand, has always been relatively unchurched. half the time he says something, i have to ask 2 or 3 times that he repeat himself. he's just that southern. worked every day of his life to support grandma and 8 kids. when i was little, i thought he was black; he labored outside in the sun doing construction work so much. come to find out now he's actually half seminole indian. ha, i didn't get none o' that!

so there's a little bit about my grandparents, the nun and the cowboy. great fun to hang out with. never a dull moment!
