gone fishin'
16 July 2004

spent yesterday with one of my boys engaged in that most countryesque of all american passtimes: fishin'. not fishing. fishin'. i hadn't done that since i was 8 years old. fished from 8 in the morning until about midnight. i never thought i would get into it, but after spending a good 16 hours on the lake, i love fishin'.

i ended up catching the biggest one of the day, a nice fat bluegill, but due to a mishap involving my friends knotting skills the little sucker got away. earlier that day i had grabbed the fish by the bottom jaw, hoisted him up to eye level, and said, "i'm gonna eat you!" i guess God decided to play a little joke on me. oh well, there'll be more fish to fry someday.

today i had a bible study with one of my kids over some cold chili's food. he wants to become a Christian now, and i think he is going to be baptized on sunday morning. i told him i would take him to a bathtub or river somewhere and do it right now, but he is still thinking about it. considering the cost.

i think i've figured out that something most people should be taught when they're thinking about becoming a Christian is to consider the cost of being Jesus' disciple. too many in this area, no, everywhere, just want to do enough to "get saved" and then run, spit, and cuss their way to judgment day and hand God their golden Jesus ticket. of course i'm not saying that our works are what land us in heaven, but if you go into salvation with the mindset that you're only buying "fire insurance" then you're obviously not ready to experience the transforming power of God in your life. just some thoughts from my summer observances.

i know everyone is dying for...
